Project Art Works (PAW) is an organisation based in Hastings which works with people with complex needs. PAW has a national reputation in delivering high quality arts projects - so Hastings Pier Charity is delighted to have been able to work with the group on a new film project entitled ‘Portrait of a Pier’ for the past 2 years.
The aim of the project was to give the participants special access to the pier site throughout the reconstruction phase from 2014 right through until opening in 2016. During this time, we were interested to observe how the space changed from restricted and confined to open and spacious and to see how this might affect individual’s responses and connection to the Pier.
The participants and their carers responded creatively to the space - making paintings, clay work, collages and films in their studio and at the Pier Hub.
The final film a ‘Portrait of a Pier’ will be screened on Hastings Pier at the opening and some of the shorter films can be viewed here.
This project was managed for HPC by Beatrice Rapley, supported by Jo McLaughlan. Our thanks to Kate Adams, Tim Corrigan, Matt Pitts, David Rhodes and all of the wonderful staff and participants at PAW.
